Team Leader: Sarah Barbulesco-Lamb

In Theater & Film Major, we build a community of actors, writers, producers, directors, visionaries, techies, dancers, and singers. Prop building, set design, and producing student films are other exciting areas of focus in this major. Students who choose this focus can expect to take more written, oral, and dramatic performance-based courses. If you have a love for being on stage or in front of the camera, or if you are someone who wants to be a part of that creative process from behind the scenes, this is the C.I. Major for you! Also, anyone who desires to work in any career in writing should definitely join us in Theater & Film. Possible college majors include English, international relations, drama, dance, journalism, linguistics, or film.

In fall, we build our skills with acting, directing, and producing while bringing to life classics, modern works, and original pieces written by CI students. We learn through play with theater games as well as hone our talents with scripting, editing, and shooting films. This work culminates in our Holiday Show each December. Here, students have the opportunity to showcase their work live on-stage or up on the big screen in front of an audience.

Each spring, we turn our focus entirely to theater for our large scale productions as these shows take the entire heart of the major to bring to fruition. We are proud of the work our theater team has produced which has been commented on by professionals in the theater community. We have sold out shows on multiple occasions, so buy your tickets in advance!

In Spring 2023, the students performed an original one act “TRIGGER” written by Mrs. B and The Ketchup Scene. The performers reached a new level and depth with their craft with the one act and entertained with hilarity and antics with the scene.

All of CI’s shows are performed at the Geery Theater, located in downtown Sacramento (2130 L Street). The students tech the show (hanging lights, learning how to operate the sound & light boards, and putting together the set with the help of parents and teachers each year. We look forward to 2023-2024!

In Spring 2022, we performed “Lockdown” by Douglas Craven. We had many new actors as well as worked with a new student-director.

Due to the shutdown, we added Film to our Theater major and have not looked back since with creating student movies. In 2021, we shot an entire movie over Zoom which was an original work written by our Theater & Film Team Leader Sarah Barbulesco-Lamb (aka Mrs. B). In 2020, students filmed from their individual homes and submitted shots to our team leader and student editors to put together “Walt’s Mousetrap,” a move written by four of our theater and film major students.

In 2018-2019, we performed “Enough”, written by Mrs. B, in Spring 2018, we produced two One Acts, “Circumvention” and “Hamlette”, and the year before, we performed “Alice in Wonder High” (a modernization of Alice in Wonderland, written by Barbulesco-Lamb).

If you have an interest in theater, we encourage you to try out for this year’s play!  All students, regardless of Major, are welcome to be a part of the show (however, if you want a lead role, you must be in the Theater & Film Major).  Mrs. B has a rule that anyone who wants to be involved in the show will be.  Auditions only decide which role you will have, not whether you will have one.  Additionally, if you are interested in learning the art of directing, producing, set design, lighting design, or working backstage or in the tech booth, the CI school play is an experience not to be missed!
